Private family history

Your family’s story, one tree.

KinRoots keeps ancestors, descendants and partners on one living canvas, with the photos, dates, places and stories that make them people rather than names. Built for a family to keep together, not for the world to search.

Accounts are created by invitation from a tree owner. Relatives can view with a link, no account needed.

See the whole shape

Four, five, six generations on one screen, with every couple and every sibling row in its place.

Keep what memory loses

A birthplace, a nickname, the year a grandfather moved abroad: written once, kept for every generation after.

Built together

Several editors, one tree. No more six slightly different spreadsheets in six different homes.

Everything a family tree needs

From the first grandparent you add to a printed poster for the reunion, each step is covered.

One canvas, every generation

Ancestors above, descendants below, partners side by side. Children sit centred under their parents, so the shape of the family reads at a glance. Pan, pinch and zoom, or focus on any person to recentre the tree around them.

A profile for every person

Birth and death, places, where they live now, and a biography for the stories that would otherwise be lost. Mark adopted, step or foster links, and record marriages, divorces and partnerships with their dates.

Life timeline

Births, marriages and children appear automatically. Add moves, schooling, work, military service and burials, and the timeline orders them by date, even when only the year is known.

Relationship finder

Pick any two people and KinRoots names the link: second cousin once removed, great-grandfather, sister-in-law, step-son. The path lights up on the tree so you can follow it.

Photos that stay with the family

Upload a portrait for each person, cropped in the browser before it is stored. Keep older photos in a gallery and choose which one shows on the card.

Search by name, year or place

Type a few letters and jump straight to the person, or find everyone born in 1942 or everyone from Perumbadappa.

Import and export, no lock-in

Bring a tree in from Ancestry, MyHeritage, Gramps or any genealogy program through GEDCOM, and export back out the same way. A JSON backup of everything is one click away.

Posters and PDFs

Render the whole tree as a high-resolution image or a PDF poster with a title and date, ready to print for a reunion or frame for the wall.

View-only links for relatives

Share a private link with the wider family. They can explore the tree, read the stories and see the photos, but nothing can be changed. Revoke a link at any time.

Editors by invitation

Invite the family historians by email. Each editor signs in with their own account, and the owner decides who can edit and who can only view.

Works on a phone

The same tree on a phone, tablet or desktop. On a small screen the profile slides up from the bottom and the tree answers to a pinch.

Private by default

There is no public directory and no sign-up page. Nobody sees your family unless you invite them or hand them a link, and your data lives on your own server.

How it works

No templates to fill, no spreadsheet to maintain. The tree grows one relative at a time.

  1. 1

    Start with one person

Create a tree and add yourself, a parent or a grandparent. Add relatives from any profile: a parent, a spouse, a child or a sibling, and the tree lays itself out.

  2. 2

    Fill in the stories

Dates, places, photos and life events. Write the anecdotes down while the people who remember them are still around to ask.

  3. 3

    Bring the family in

Invite a cousin to help edit, send a view-only link to the family group, and print a poster for the next gathering.

Private by design

A family tree holds birthdays, addresses and the names of living children. KinRoots treats it that way.

  • ✓No public profiles, no search engine, no sign-up form. Every account is created by an invitation from the tree's owner.
  • ✓Three levels of access: the owner, the editors they invite, and view-only links for everyone else.
  • ✓Links can expire and can be revoked. Photos are served only to people who may see that tree.
  • ✓Runs on your own server with your own database. Export a full backup whenever you like.

Start with one name.

Add a grandparent tonight. In a month the cousins will be arguing about who was born first, and the tree will settle it.
